In addition to structural enhancements, the project introduced advanced technological systems, such as a new ground visibility monitoring system, a state-of-the-art Instrument Landing System (ILS), and the replacement of over 1,200 halogen airfield lights with energy-efficient LED lights. These improvements aim to boost safety, operational precision, and sustainability at the airport, aligning with the global push for greener aviation infrastructure.
Meeting Growing Demand
The reopening of the Northern Runway allows Zayed International Airport to return to dual-runway operations, enabling it to better accommodate the rising air traffic demand. During the runway's closure, the airport operated solely on the Southern Runway without disruptions, effectively managing increased flights.
Elena Sorlini, Managing Director and CEO of Abu Dhabi Airports stated: “The successful completion of the Northern Runway Rehabilitation Project ahead of schedule is a testament to our meticulous planning and collaboration. This enhanced infrastructure will enable us to effectively handle growing air traffic and optimize operations at AUH.”
