Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a large-scale upgrade of Al Wasl Road, spanning 15 kilometers from Umm Suqeim Street to 2nd December Street. The redevelopment is set to cut travel times by 50% and boost vehicle capacity from 8,000 to 12,000 cars per hour in both directions.
The plan includes the construction of five tunnels covering 3.85 kilometers and an expansion of the road to three lanes in each direction. Major intersections at Al Thanya, Al Manara, Umm Al Sheif, Umm Amara, Al Orouba, and Al Safa Streets will be redesigned to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.
In addition to easing transport, the project will introduce new pedestrian pathways, cycling tracks, boulevards, and landscaped public areas, contributing to community wellbeing and urban aesthetics.
Serving one of Dubai’s busiest residential districts—with over one million residents—the upgrade is a key part of the city’s broader strategy to modernize infrastructure and accommodate continued growth.
